by Steve Giddins, 160pp. (2006 Gambit)

Steve Giddins has chosen 50 supremely instructive games - some old, some new, and including many that few readers will have seen before. He has annotated these games in detail from a modern perspective, explaining the useful lessons that can be learnt from them, while avoiding the harmful dogma that characterized many older works of this type. Topics include: Attacking the King, Defence, Piece Power, and Endgame Themes. Each game is followed by a recap of the main lessons to be learned.

Giddins writes in a highly accessible down-to-earth style that appeals to club players seeking to improve their understanding of practical chess. His knowledge of Russian-language chess literature has enabled him to find many excellent examples that have not appeared in previous western literature.

Comments : This book is Giddins' modern take on the classic by Chernev, "The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played." I believe he has improved on Chernev. His writing style is very clear and concise. You KNOW what point(s) he is trying to make and he provides only minimum variations to keep confusion low. I think this is an excellent addition to fully annotated game collections and most useful for intermediate level players. Largely concerned with positional concepts, the book illuminates many middlegame and endgame ideas. Very well done!

Comments : I reviewed this book (in detail) on Amazon.com, but let me say {here} that this is a very fine book.

Many of the young people that I teach chess on the Internet (and in my circle of friends) were all saying the smae thing: "Hey A.J., you gotta take a look at this book!"

MANY of the lessons that I teach my students are included in this volume, a very handy feature is that ALL the games are finely annotated and divided into five thematic and instructive sections.

EVERY PLAYER BELOW 1600 ... should own this work! Buy it, if you want to get better!! I personally guarantee you will learn many chess-related ideas and motifs that you are not familiar with.
