by C.J.S. Purdy, with commentary by Ron Weick, 192pp. (Thinkers' Press, 2000)
Purdy, one of the finest chess journalists of all time, sought to develop an opening system that would get the player who didn't have time or inclination for extensive study of opening theory to a playable middlegame. White, having the first move, is less susceptible to opening shocks, so Purdy concentrated on Black.
"My aim is to enable you to avoid losing games in the opening, to show you how to obtain a reasonably level game as Black with the minimum of "swotting," so that when you and your opponents are both out of the books you will have a 50 - 50 chance."
