by Peter Romanovsky, 196pp. (1991)

The second volume in Romanovsky’s classic Chess Middlegame set.

This book forms the second part of Peter Romanovsky’s classic Russian textbook on the middlegame. It is written with a view to helping the reader acquire a practical understanding of middlegame techniques as well as an appreciation of the beauty and esthetics of chess.

The author discusses the relationships of chess history to modern day thinking, the inter-relationships of positional weaknesses with combinational motifs, the cooperation of the pieces in tactical operations and the importance of a balanced and organized thinking process.

Comments : One of the earliest books I know of that explains combinations from the 1930s and before. This is based on the author's own understanding as well as conversations he had with Alekhine. In addition, he was the first writer to use the modern terminology now used routinely by contemporary chess writers. Always highly recommended to players needing further instruction in the fundamental principles of the game.
