by Mikhail Tal, 496 pp. (Everyman Chess 1997)

Mikhail Tal, the "Magician from Riga", was the greatest attacking World Champion of them all, and this enchanting autobiography chronicles his extraordinary career with charm and humor. Dazzling games are interspersed throughout with anecdotes and witty self-interviews, and in typically objective fashion he relates both the ups and downs of his encounters.

Tal's annotations in this book are a world apart from ordinary game collections. No reader could fail to be swept along by his passion and vitality as he sets the scene for an encounter and then recounts every psychological twist and turn.

Comments : The biographical information in the book is sparse and not in a linear or chronological order. The games selected are dated in the same time period as each section so you can see his developement. If you are looking for a 'life of Tal' you can gleam some of it in between each game. If you are looking for a collection of games then this is a great book.

Comments : For me, this book and "Tal-Botvinnik 1960" are both very good and worth every minute spent reading them. This book on Tal's life and games is really a good choice for those looking to explore playing the game in a more dynamic way. Tal's ability to calculate sacrifices is without comparison and his annotations are extremely well written. I like it very much!

Comments : I just received it one week ago and seen 7 games (out of 100). Great Book. Going through Tal's games and annotations is a dream vacation for any chess enthusiast.
