The Complete Run of Lasker’s Chess Magazine, 1904-1909
by Emanuel Lasker (ed.)

There are eight hardcover volumes per complete set, part of the Moravian Publishing reprint series.

Although many chessplayers today are familiar with the classic books written by Emanuel Lasker, including Common Sense in Chess, St. Petersburg 1909 and the legendary Lasker’s Manual of Chess, few know that for almost five years, he also published a chess magazine. From November 1904 to January 1909, the second world chess champion, edited a monthly magazine, Lasker’s Chess Magazine.

As noted by Lasker’s biographer Dr. Jacques Hannak, Lasker’s Chess Magazine didn't just contain the usual collection of games and problems, coupled with a few news items, it went much deeper, revealing more of the meaning and background of chess than any previous chess editor had attempted. Indeed, in an early editorial Lasker rails zealously against the contemporary chess periodicals.

Celebrated problemist Sam Loyd contributed a monthly column, and Lasker's own Game Department annotations were penetrating, not just in their analysis of moves played, but also the style and characteristics of different masters. In addition, regular features included instruction, news, editorials, endings and much, much more.

Whether in his books or magazine, Lasker is without doubt difficult to match - both in his fresh approach and in terms of quality of the writing. Almost a century later, Emanuel Lasker’s writings, annotations and yes, even his play, still resonate with modern chessplayers.
