by Jon Speelman, 172pp. (Batsford 1997)
The third edition of Speelman's original, acclaimed work on general endgame concepts and themes. By using practical examples, the author explains the basic themes and examines the analysis of important positions by previous endgame authorities.
The author has divided his approach to endgames into three sections. In section 1 he looks at various theoretical endgames; section 2 consists of some rather heavy analysis of these endings - primary among these being the first game of the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match – and section 3 contains some rather more digestible material in the shape of a dozen “Practical Endings.” A good companion volume with Endgame Preparation.
