John Nunn shows that the endgame, far from being a rather slow phase of the game, is in fact highly tactical, requiring accurate calculation and constant alertness. Mating attacks can appear out of nowhere, while stalemate and perpetual check are constant dangers. Accurate apply is also needed to handle such key themes as pawn breakthroughs, manoeuvring and zugzwang.
Using many practical examples from grandmaster play, Nunn shows how even top players frequently miss golden opportunities simply because they are not expecting tactics to arise. Since adjournments have almost disappeared from competitive chess players of levels will benefit from learning more about the endgame.
